# Guaranteed-issue Medigap when a Medicare Advantage plan ends

If a Medicare Advantage plan leaves Medicare, stops covering your area, or you move out of its service area, federal rules give people 65 and older a guaranteed-issue right when they switch to Original Medicare.

You can buy Medigap Plan A, B, C, D, F, G, K, or L that is sold in your state. Plan N and Plan M are not included. Plans C and F are not sold to people newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. An insurer cannot turn you down or charge more because of your health.

Apply from 60 days before the Medicare Advantage coverage ends through 63 days after it ends. The Medigap policy cannot start until that coverage ends. Keep the plan's notice.

Joining another Medicare Advantage plan does not come with this Medigap right. Doing nothing returns you to Original Medicare without a supplement and without drug coverage. Part D has its own enrollment deadline.

Oregon's birthday rule and Washington's year-round Medigap switching apply to people who already have Medigap. They are not a substitute for this window. A separate 12-month trial right applies if you joined Medicare Advantage when you first became eligible at 65, or if you dropped a Medigap policy to try Medicare Advantage for the first time.
