Switching a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Policy

Birthday rule: beginning 30 days before your birthday and ending 30 days after, you can replace an existing Medigap policy with another plan that has the same or lesser benefits, with no health underwriting. You must already hold a Medigap policy.

If you already have Medigap Plan B through N, you can switch to another Plan B through N at any time without a health questionnaire. If you have Plan A, you can switch only to another Plan A. Washington also requires community rating: premiums for a standardized plan form are the same regardless of age or health, with limited exceptions such as payment method.

Medigap Pre-Existing Condition Waiting Period

Follows the federal standard: insurers may impose up to a 6-month waiting period outside guaranteed-issue situations.

Capped at 3 months by state law (shorter than the federal 6-month maximum). Replacement policies must credit time already served under the prior Medigap policy.

ACA Marketplace Enrollment Window (2027 coverage)

Starting November 1, 2026, enroll on Explore Health (Oregon's state marketplace replacing HealthCare.gov). Oregon's marketplace site: enroll November 1–December 15 for January 1 coverage; December 16–January 15 for February 1 coverage.

Enroll on Washington Healthplanfinder. Open Enrollment is November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Sign up by December 31 for January 1 coverage; January 1–15 for February 1 coverage.

Short-Term Limited-Duration Plans

Capped at 3 months total, including renewals. A new short-term policy from the same insurer within 60 days of expiration counts as a renewal.

Capped at 3 months, cannot be renewed, and cannot result in more than 3 months of short-term coverage in any 12-month period (WAC 284-43-8000). Availability still depends on whether any carrier is selling a compliant plan; confirm with us or the Washington OIC before counting on one.
